Chapter 6

The Concierge welcomed Kenny and Jade into the restaurant at breakfast. They went straight to the counters, helped themselves to food and returned to their regular table. As he sat down, Kenny noticed a large envelope with their names printed on it. He picked it up.

“What’s that?” Jade asked.

He handed it to her. “I’m guessing it’s the details of your next challenge.”

Jade opened the envelope. Sure enough, it contained a piece of gold card with black embossed writing. She read it, raised her eyebrows and passed it to Kenny. He looked at it.

The Anagram Treasure Hunt

[Hedge Maze. 2pm Start]

He scratched his chin. “Anagram Treasure Hunt?”

Jade didn’t look impressed. “That doesn’t sound any better than the last one. I want fucking, not a fucking crossword puzzle.” She scowled at his reaction. “And don’t you go smirking. You’ve had more sex at these games than I have!”

“That was your idea.”

She took a breath, then nodded. “I know.” After glancing around the room, she added, “No sign of Shawna and Troy this morning.”

Kenny checked their table. “Maybe they ate earlier or decided to have breakfast in their room.”

“Yeah, maybe.” She ate for a few seconds, then looked up at him. “How much debt do you reckon they’re in?”

He thought about it. “The fact they’re being threatened suggests it’s not a trivial amount.”

“Yeah, that’s what I thought.” Jade chewed her lip. “I really hope she wins this tournament.”

Once he’d finished his cereal, Kenny went up to get a plate of bacon and pancakes. Jade followed him, frowning at the mountain of food on his plate as she helped herself to scrambled eggs and a single slice of wholemeal toast. Back at their table, they discussed what to do until the start of their next challenge.

“As gorgeous as the grounds are,” she said, “walking round them twice is enough for me.”

Kenny nodded. “How about we visit the spa?”

“That sounds good. You want to go for a workout first?”

“Not especially. I’ll be happy to sit in a sauna and hot-tub for a couple of hours. The gym at home will still be there when we get back to London.”

“I think there’s a pool, too.”

Breakfast finished, they left the restaurant and went back to their room to get their swimsuits. Like every other facility in the hotel, the spa was luxurious and tasteful, offering a small indoor pool as well as a hot-tub, steam room and sauna. They got changed in one of the large cubicles and wandered along the mosaic-tiled floor to the steam room, which was unoccupied. Jade climbed onto the higher of the wooden benches and Kenny took the lower one on the adjacent wall so they were sitting at right-angles to each other. He leaned his head back and closed his eyes, and they sat in silence for several minutes.

“Can I ask you something?” Jade said.

Kenny opened his eyes and saw his wife was lying on her tummy, her head only a couple of feet from his. “Sure.”

“What do you feel when you watch me with another man?”

He frowned.
